Media Release 20 Jan 2011 - Kutalayna, Brighton

The lower Jordan River levee site at Kutalayna, Brighton, contains stone tools and other evidence of human activity dating back over 40,000 years. This makes it one of the oldest such sites in the Southern Hemisphere. Climate Action Hobart supports the efforts of the Tasmanian Aboriginal community to protect it. Aboriginal people were here first, they own this land. They knew how to live in harmony with the environment. We would all be a lot better off if we protected what remains of their precious cultural heritage and learnt from it, instead of destroying it to make way for more roads, which only encourage more cars and therefore more deadly greenhouse gas emissions. We call on the state and federal governments to do what is required to truly protect this important site.
