Australia has signed the Paris climate deal at United Nations headquarters in New York.

The deal brings together key players like China, India and the United States for the first time; and it will come into force as soon as the 55 countries responsible for 55 per cent of the world's greenhouse gases have ratified it.

Australia says it plans to do so before the end of the year.
