Our activities to date

Here's a short list of the major actions and events that Climate Action Hobart has organised or taken part in since it's inception:

Protest in Hobart CBD at the Rudd government's weak 5% CPRS reduction target in early 2009,

National Climate Emergency Rally at Parliament Lawns, Hobart in June 2009, with around 3000 participants,

Safe Climate Forum in Hobart in Sept 2009 which lead to the formulation of "Ten Steps for a Safe Climate",

Participation in the "350 Day" candlelit procession in Hobart in Oct 2009,

Co-organiser of the Walk Against Warming rally in the upper Florentine forest in Dec 2009,

Launch of the "Ten Steps for a Safe Climate" as benchmarks for Tasmanian climate policy at Mawson Place in Jan 2010,

Various actions during the lead up to the March 2010 Tasmanian election, including

    • Launch of the "Safe Climate Scorecard" on Parliament Lawns,

    • "Dancing with the Climate Stars" Competition in Salamanca Square,

    • "Human Windmill" for a 100% Renewable Electricity Island on Salamanca lawns,

    • "Vote for a Safe Climate" policy forum held at the University of Tasmania with representatives of all political parties taking part.

Participation in the Dunalley Climate Change, Community & Living Well Day in May 2010,

Contribution to the national launch of 100% Renewables campaign in May 2010 (through to 2011),

Participation in the National Day of Action on Wood Fired Power in June 2010,

Organisation of the shared World Environment Day celebrations in Hobart in June 2010,

Participation in the Treadlightly Envirofest at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens in June 2010,

Participation in the National Day of Action against Coal Fired Power in July 2010, and

Co-organiser of the Walk Against Warming rally in Hobart in August 2010 during the lead up to the federal election,

Participation in 350.org's global day of work parties on 10th October 2010, with a recycling drive at the Hobart Show Grounds Sunday market,

Participation in the Sustainable Living Expo on the Hobart waterfront in November 2010,

Participation in Oxfam's 'Islanders for Islands' Hobart event on the impact that climate change is already having on the lives of our Pacific Island neighbours, Nov 2010,

Organiser of the 'Transitioning Tasmania to a Zero Carbon Future' BZE launch, including the Zero Carbon Australia 2020 Stationary Energy Plan, Hobart, Nov 2010,

"Light a Candle for Survival" event in Hobart for Earth Hour March 2011,

Holding of the "Whatever happened to Tasmania as a renewable energy island?" public meeting held in Hobart, March 2011,

Local organiser of the Say Yes to Action on Climate Change rally in Hobart's Franklin Square in June 2011,

Participation in 350.org's Moving Planet Global Day of Action with a bike ride to and rally on Hobart's waterfront in Sept 2011,

Convening of an expert's workshop in Hobart to investigate low cost /no cost climate action ideas and options for the state government's consideration in Dec 2011,

Co-organiser of the local event at Roches Beach, highlighting storm surge damage as part of 350.org's Global Climate Impacts Day in May 2012,

Climate Future Workshop in June 2013, with keynote speaker Prof Will Steffen (the "Angry Summers" report), Strategies for action, Life-sustaining systems and practices, Change, & Renewing Hope.

Stakeholder collaboration on the Tasmanian govt's "Climate Smart Tasmania" strategy document, as endorsed by state cabinet in November 2013.

Organiser of the candidates' forum on climate change, held during the state election campaign, Hobart, February 2014.

Particpants in the March Australia rally in Hobart in August 2014.

Co-organiser of the local event for the People’s Climate March / Global Day of Action, held at MONA, Sept 2014.

Organiser of the "Reclaiming your Power" workshop held in Hobart, Oct 2014.

Tasmanian convenor of national climate mobilisation working group in leadup to UNFCC's CoP21 in Paris Dec 2015

Collaboration with other grass roots climate change action groups around Australia, plus international organisations such as 350.org, and including attendances at the national Climate Action Summit conferences.

Meetings with various state and federal politicians and candidates of all political parties, to keep them informed on climate change issues and the increasing importance of strong and early action against climate disruption.

Submissions and responses to various climate related policy proposals & laws at both state and federal levels, incl. a review of the Climate Change Act (Tas) 2008 and the Adaptation & Mitigation white papers.

Organiser for workshops and film screenings on various climate related topics.

Assisted with inaugural "Tasmanian Climate Change Stories" for local high school students in Oct 2017

Attended the CoP 23 UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn, Germany in Nov 2017, as an official observer, being a member of CANA (Climate Action Network Australia).

Organiser of the candidates' forum on climate change, held during the state election campaign, Hobart, February 2018.

We have organised several climate Honkathons during 2018 to share the @StopAdani message.

Supporting students undertaking climate strikes during 2019.

Partnered with Climate Resilience Network, Doctors for the Environment, Green Health Tasmania and Impact to screen the "2040" film at the State Cinema in Sept 2019.
